| How to Help
Volunteer
Readers age 18 or over who have the desire to tutor another adult one or two hours a week - or even a few hours a month - can make a huge difference as a volunteer adult literacy tutor or as a volunteer in other capacities for his or her local literacy council.
Volunteer tutors are trained to work one-on-one with adults who are reading below a fifth- to eighth-grade reading level. They and their students can meet at the local council or anywhere in the community at any time of day.
In training, volunteers learn how to work with adults who need to read better and / or learn English as a Second Language (ESL). If you want to become an ESL tutor, you only need to know the English langauge and have a desire to help the student.
Donate
Support from individuals is crucial to literacy in Arkansas. In addition to the volunteers needed for tutoring, there are monetary needs to purchase books/workbooks for tutors and students; computers and software for student learning, assessment and data reporting; rent/utilities for council offices; internet/e-mail/phone services; volunteer tutor training; and staff/volunteer inservice training. We have a number of options for our donors. If you would like to discuss any of these in more detail, please contact us by any of the methods to the left.
